Wasn’t there anything of use anywhere in this damned mess? One would think with so many people dead and gone that there would be enough to go around! Well, at least, there would be enough of what they had left behind to go around. However this did not seem to be the case. It was never the case, was it? Not when Kaleb needed or wanted something. Now that he was taking the time to dig through piles of shit and rust he couldn’t find anything! But he wasn’t dense, just in denial. He knew that people were constantly digging around for treasures from the past or something that may have fallen in from Utopia in hopes of getting something out of it. Wasn’t that kind of why he was there? Actually, it was more like half way he was there.
Kaleb was only making rounds in every scrap yard around (which were one too many) to find computer parts. His had fried completely after the fan had gone out and the last thing he wanted was for anyone to give him any shit for not having some kind of computer up and running. He was the tech wiz, the master hacker (that may have been a little fluffed up to make him sound good)! As such it was expected of him to do… smart things or whatever. He had a reputation to keep up and he wasn’t about to let it slip up. However after several hours of searching and coming up empty handed Kaleb realized that it was better to have tried and lost than not tried at all. So he gave up his search and decided to try a different method… a less desirable method since he was usually horribly cheap. He would cave. He would go to the underground market and see what he could get out of it.
As usual there were plenty of people shuffling around. Was it just him or did this place just feel… shameful and dirty? Not that Kaleb felt shameful or dirty – oh no, Kaleb had learned a long time ago that being something less than perfect and someone willing to get dirty was nothing for him to personally feel ashamed of. Stolen goods, found goods, or whatever they were happened to be fine with him. In a world like this it was not easy to come by anything and not very many people would have your back if you pointed any fingers. Kaleb didn’t point fingers and he didn’t ask too many questions. He could figure out things by himself anyways.
Alright, computer parts… computer parts… computer parts?
Kaleb’s eyes scanned over the many scattered tables and booths, piercing through the crowds to try and take in the smallest of details. But computer parts were one thing that Kaleb could not locate. There were lots of things. There were lots of old clothes and lots of trinkets. There was also some food but it did not look too tempting.
It was the littlest of glints from one of the tiniest objects. Kaleb was not sure why it had caught his attention at first and he paused to glance down at it. It was hanging with in a messy tangle of other necklaces and looked dull compared to the others that it hung with. Kaleb leaned forward and wrapped his fingers around it. As he brought it up from its spot several necklaces clattered onto the table and he heard the seller scold him. He glanced over to see a rolled up paper being shaken at him in warning. Kaleb didn’t mind it and looked back to the little locket he now held in-between his thumb and index finger. Carefully he forced it open.
He wasn’t sure how surprised he was. He knew the locket very well. Even though the memories were dull and her face was not clear he had seen this very locket around his mother’s neck in his few memories as a child. He knew this was hers. He knew it because even though the gold was chipped and the circular shape had been bent into an awkward oval the locket still had one piece of clear evidence: the picture in it was of him. A much younger him but it was him nonetheless! The tiny photo of his father on the opposite side had long been removed and there was nothing in its place.
Kaleb’s eyes shot up toward the woman selling the junk. He held the locket up. “This is me,” he insisted, holding out the locket. She leaned forward (having to stand on her toes due to her eerily small size and round figure) and eyed it and then eyed him. Then she laughed loudly, tossing her head back for emphasis. Kaleb furrowed his brow.
“Doesn’t make it yours!” she shot at him, still laughing. She also seemed to not believe him. Whatever. She probably couldn’t see very well passed her fake eyelashes with the glue crusting…[/style][STYLE=background-color: f8f8f8; width: 230px; padding: 10px; height: 30px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; font-family: tahoma; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px;][STYLE=background-color: 2c2927; color: f1f1f1; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: -1px; overflow: auto; height: 20px; padding: 5px; text-align: center;]tagged for arrow[/style][/style] |

i'll just sing with the birds ,
The market. What a wonderfully splendid place! It was full of people who were full of money (okay, not full of money, but they had some). The sheer amount of people made up for their individual lack of coins. But Arrow wasn't scouting for simple coins. She wanted the paper money! It was a lot more valuable - although it was only paper.
It was time to do what made her particularly famous around these parts: steal. Arrow had nimble little fingers, quick and precise. And if she couldn't steal that way, she was quite the charmer. Granted, that only worked with men, but you win some, you lose some. Mostly, Arrow relied on her agile hands and ability to lie and void her face of all signs of guilt. When in doubt, deny, deny, deny!
Arrow prowled the streets of the marketplace, searching for a particularly easy target. Looking for those types of people was like a lioness just waiting for the herd to thin so that she could pounce on the youngest or sickest wildebeest. They made themselves very apparent in the way that they acted and moved. Arrow's victims rarely even realized that she had come and gone until it was too late. The satisfaction of such a career came from sitting back and watching from the shadows at the people who were pick-pocketed. The first stage was doubt. They thought 'surely I had my wallet a minute ago'. The second stage was panic, especially if they were about to purchase an item. Normally after that, the third stage was desperation or pleading. Arrow was never in a mood to fulfill someone's wishes for their money back. After all, she worked hard, too. She was a master of her trade! No one outwitted Arrow. No one out-sleighted Arrow. No one. Why else would she be the guild master of the thieves' guild?
Suddenly Arrow's interest was piqued. There it was - there was her chance. Bounding from the alleyway, Arrow cautiously approached a stand with a precarious lady who apparently owned the place. A man had interrupted her flow of business, leaving a huge, gaping hole just perfect for Arrow to wriggle into. With the woman's attention elsewhere, Arrow swiftly slipped in through the few customers at the stand and stooped closely to the merchandise - in this case, jewelry - as if she were examining it closely. She thumbed through a bracelet or two, nodding and shaking her head as she saw fit. Eventually Arrow picked up a rather shimmery hunk of metal. As she held it up to her eyes to actually check its quality, in her peripheral she could see a rather familiar face. How could she miss those blue eyes? Arrow grinned, despite him not even noticing her, and brought the hunk of metal that was a necklace close to her. With a hasty gesture, she stuffed it into her bra and immediately shuffled to a different side, as if continuing to browse other wares. However, her interest was not with the other shinies, but with the familiar face.
Arrow had not been eavesdropping much, but she managed to catch what her fond friend had said, as well as the lady's reply. With a skipping sort of gait, Arrow approached the poor soul who had received the very blunt retort from the owner of the stand. She did not try to sneak up on him, as she figured he had already seen her coming. Instead, she silently bounded up toward him like some sort of overeager child. "Ah, Kaleb!" Arrow exclaimed while snatching the locket from his grasp. Like the necklace she had stolen, she again held the locket up toward her eyes, so as better to inspect it. She squinted, obviously perturbed by the quality of the accessory. Shaking her head, she placed it back on the stand so that, hopefully, the woman would place her attention elsewhere. Arrow turned toward Kaleb again, an unusually bright (yet cynical) smile on her features. "I hope you're not here to buy too much, Kaleb. You still owe me, remember?" Her grin widened, slightly exposing her top row of teeth. Then she carelessly gestured over to the locket he had had in his hand. "And that won't get you much money." Finally, Arrow shrugged and threw up her hands at her side, signaling the end of that topic. She did, however, pluck the necklace off the table again and open the locket to see just what he had been fussing over. Immediately Arrow's features softened as she realized whose picture was inside. "Aw, it's little Kaleb. You are just too cute always," Arrow commented with a smitten sort of wrinkle of her nose. She coiled the chain up until it resembled nothing but a tiny gold ball with an oblong locket between the folds and then took Kaleb's hand and firmly placed the spindle of gold neatly in his palm. Swiftly she closed his hand so no one would see what was inside. "See, if you were in my guild, you wouldn't have to buy anything," Arrow whispered playfully. |

That old thing was just a memory, a thing of the past long forgotten and best left that way if he had any brains. What was he thinking he was going to do with it? Did he think he’d just pocket it and keep it as some mindless keepsake? Kaleb wasn’t the kind of guy to keep clutter around him since it just caused unnecessary confusion. It was not like he would have given it to his dad either. His dad and mom clearly had not been very close to one another and when they had split up they had meant to keep it that way completely. It was proof enough that the other person in the locket was missing. He was sure his dad would have been thrilled to keep that. Maybe the little boy in him had thought his dad would take it up in his hands and clutch it to his heart like the thing held the most precious of his memories. Every kid wanted their parents to be with one another, didn’t they? Kaleb wasn’t much of a kid anymore though. He also was not the type to keep sentiments that virtually meant nothing to him wrapped around his neck. He wasn’t about to make a fuss or pay for the piece of crap.
His attention was easily brought away from the item. A familiar blond was hurrying his way. She clearly already had her eyes on him but Kaleb could not deny that the thought of ducking and taking cover somewhere had crossed his mind. Honestly, Arrow Strom was always one of the last people that he ever wanted to see and for more than just one reason. She had a way with pushing his buttons.
When she snatched the locket from his hands he allowed it. He watched as she looked it over (feeling a slight urge to reach out and take it back from her) and then tossed it back to the side. It was just as worthless emotionally as it was… in any other way. It was old and cheaply made. He wasn’t sure who would even buy the thing. He wasn’t even sure why it had wound up on this – no, that ugly woman selling the things looked cheap enough. Kaleb obviously wasn’t going to be the person to buy it from her though. It wasn’t worth it. That and Arrow was more than kind enough to point out that he was in her debt. He felt like he was forever in her debt… but, hey, what could he do? It wasn’t like he was going to bail on his dad and leave him to these thieving wolves. The world was a mess and Kaleb wasn’t going to leave the only family he had lost in that mess.
“Maybe I was hoping to find something for a pretty girl,” he said with a nonchalant smile and equally relaxed grin. He wasn’t sure why he said it. He supposed he just did not like the idea of giving into her badgering. “Too bad there aren’t any of them left.”
Kaleb was not at all surprised to Arrow take the necklace back up from the table in one quick motion. He was surprised though to find himself reaching out toward the necklace when she had gone to pull it opened. The slightest hint of embarrassment showed on his face and he hid it by furrowing his brow at her. He wasn’t sure why he felt so strong about it but he really didn’t think it was any of her business what that ugly thing may have meant to him. Even if it was nothing it was still something. Or, more like, it had been something at some point. And it was something that was not mean to be in the present here with him in her hands. All he could do was let out a puff of air when she commented on the worn photograph inside of it while looking away with pursed lips. He did this until he felt her take his hand and place the locket in his palm. She curled his fingers around it and he watched curiously for a moment. Kaleb moved his eyes back up toward her at his comment.
Her guild… she was always trying to find a way to pull him into that. Maybe that was how she wanted this debt paid in the end. It was something he made clear that he did not want to pay with. Kaleb may not have been a classical good guy or anything but he wasn’t a thief and there was no way he was going to start working for one. He offered her a soft smile and then reached out to take her hand back. He placed both of his around hers as if to clasp it in a firm handshake. As he did so he transferred the balled up trinket into her palm again and then really did shake her hand.
“Unfortunately, I’m a terrible sneak,” he answered back to her just as quietly. Then he wrinkled his nose, still grinning. “And that isn’t going to make me much money.”
He let go of her hand then and stepped around her. He started to continue down the path he had been walking. He didn’t need jewelry and he didn’t need to have someone stealing it for him. Especially someone who already reminded him at every turn that he was ever in her debt.[/style][STYLE=background-color: f8f8f8; width: 230px; padding: 10px; height: 30px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; font-family: tahoma; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px;][STYLE=background-color: 2c2927; color: f1f1f1; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: -1px; overflow: auto; height: 20px; padding: 5px; text-align: center;]tagged for arrow[/style][/style] |

Kindness was not Arrow's strong point, and the only kindness she really knew how to show was by not stealing from someone, so she sort of figured that taking the necklace and giving it to Kaleb was an extraordinary feat of nicety. It seemed obvious to Arrow that he cared for it slightly, or he wouldn't have even made a fuss over it. However, Arrow was never known for her ability to understand humans very well. She just knew how to work them. That came from years and years of experience. Kaleb seemed to be an exception to her skills, though, as he was always spurning her advances and turning her away! Arrow just didn't understand, but instead of fleeing from what she didn't understand, she chased after it. Not necessarily a smart move, but a curious one.
Arrow wasn't sure why she was so interested in this guy. It was true he had some valuable assets, but apart from that, he did not offer much in the way of companionship for just herself. For the guild, he could prove very useful. As for anything more than a guild mate, well... Arrow just didn't do relationships. People were simple yet complex, too much of a conundrum for Arrow to want to be close to any of them. She still continued to find this Kaleb guy intriguing, however.
The thief peeked at Kaleb through the corner of her eyes as he spoke, smiling as he did so. Once he finished, though, her eyes moved back down toward the merchant's stand. The grin was still on her lips. For a few moments, she simply stared down at the trinkets, but she brought her attention up to Kaleb eventually. "Oh, Kaleb, you're always quite the joker!" Arrow exclaimed, followed by a forced laugh. She couldn't afford to take his words to heart. Where would she be if she wore her heart on her sleeve? Dead, that's where. So many people call her the scum of the earth or a filthy wretch for stealing from outlanders, but Arrow only grins, laughs, and comes up with some sort of snark back at them. Normally their insults don't faze her, but, being so intrigued with Kaleb, his words did sting slightly. Not enough to make her upset, though.
She was somewhat surprised when he grabbed her hand, especially because she knew he was not super touchy. Coupled with his words and the transferal of the necklace, though, she knew his intentions. As Kaleb stepped around her, Arrow unraveled her fingers to peer down at the necklace for a few moments. Then she snapped her hand shut into a fist and turned on her heel to follow after Kaleb. Once she was behind him, she placed her free hand on his shoulder to stop him. To make sure he didn't go anywhere else, Arrow created an obstacle in front of him through use of her own body. She bulked herself up as much as she possibly could to exert sternness. Her raccoon-like grin was enough to give her away, though. "You don't have to be a field thief. You've got computer skills. That's the easiest way to steal money," Arrow retorted, raising her brows expectantly up at him, proposing that he already knew such a thing.
Again Arrow took his hand and again she forcefully (even more so) placed the necklace in his palm. However, to avoid the situation that happened last time, she crossed her own arms behind her back and smirked playfully at him. "That belongs to you. You had better hold onto what's yours or someone like me will take it!" Arrow tittered fitfully, finding the irony quite amusing. "But I wouldn't steal from you, Kaleb. Even though you're not in my guild, I still think of you as such." |

Kaleb had not even managed to get several feet away before Arrow’s slender hand had rested on his shoulder and he suddenly found the woman standing firmly in front of him. Since Kaleb had no intention of running her over, he stopped and gave her a somewhat impatient look. It wasn’t exactly a look that told her to get lost. It was more of a look asking her nicely to leave him alone before he opened up his big mouth again. Had he not been in her debt then maybe he would have felt a little more comfortable with her following him around. Kaleb wasn’t a terribly uptight person – not unless you had some leverage over him that could potentially be a threat to the only family that he had left. He also wasn’t fond to have someone constantly try and pull him into a guild that he wanted absolutely nothing to do with. It was bad enough that he owed a favor to the leader of a guild of thieves. How could he not constantly be trying to get out of her way rather than stay in it?
He looked at her more seriously now with a sigh escaping from his lips. “Please, anyone can do what I do,” he told her simply. He crossed his arms over his chest and wrinkled his nose up at her. “Just takes some sitting around and patience. You can get any asshole to do it. Besides…” he paused and tilted his head to the side. “I’m spoken for in that department.”
Kaleb was about to continue on passed her until she once again forced the piece of jewelry into his hands. This time he openly glared at her but kept his fist clenched over the item. He watched her with a frown and noticed that she was a bit more determined to have him keeping it this time. Well, Kaleb wasn’t so sure he wanted to keep it anymore. It was a waste and memories that he didn’t need to deal with (okay, memories he didn’t have). It was something he knew he didn’t need… or want. Kaleb clenched it in his palm trying to decide what he wanted to do with it.
Before he could come to any conclusions he heard a sudden screech. His shoulders lifted as he stiffened and he whipped his head around to find where the sound was coming from. It was the woman who was selling the jewelry… and judging from her look she must have kept a very close eye on her inventory. Kaleb didn’t hesitate. Even before the old hag had taken any note of him Kaleb took a step toward Arrow, took the necklace, and used his finger to tuck the locket between her breasts.
“This is more your department,” he told her innocently. Then he turned away and started far more hurriedly through the streets.[/style][STYLE=background-color: f8f8f8; width: 230px; padding: 10px; height: 30px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; font-family: tahoma; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px;][STYLE=background-color: 2c2927; color: f1f1f1; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: -1px; overflow: auto; height: 20px; padding: 5px; text-align: center;]tagged for arrow[/style][/style] |

Arrow was absolutely determined to wriggle her little self into Kaleb's favor. She really had no idea how to go about doing it, though, but could only assume that material possessions were a good way to start. After all, who didn't like shiny trinkets and the like? She was smitten with loot! It was the only thing she could manage to acquire anymore.
She just couldn't fathom why Kaleb always wanted to distance himself from her. Was she offensive? Did she draw unwanted attention? Why, she was the queen of stealth! Arrow knew fully that she wasn't unattractive. She may be vain to think so but she very much believes that she is just wickedly gorgeous. She had never had anyone tell her otherwise, so there was no reason not to believe she was beautiful. So what was Kaleb's problem? Surely he wasn't gay! Oh, just the thought made Arrow snicker inwardly. It would be a shame for such a cute guy to be attracted to men. What a waste! But Arrow couldn't truthfully believe that. After all, he was working with the Resistance, under that brown-haired she-wolf. He couldn't simply be in the Resistance just to be in the Resistance. Of course, Arrow would rather him be gay than have a thing for that witch.
"Why train some monkey to do what you already can?" Arrow questioned as a cynical grin spread over her lips. She eyed him for a few moments before releasing a defeated sigh. "Plus, I won't be able to find anyone half as pretty as you! Attractive people are more successful. Did you know that?" A small smirk again graced her features but was short-lived. It was fairly obvious to Arrow that she was getting nowhere with this thick-skulled Resistance member. Her failure was disheartening, really. What else did she need to do to get this man on her side? Kiss the ground he walked on? Arrow wanted him but not enough to sacrifice her dignity.
Arrow almost started when a screech resounded between her ears, more because of Kaleb's sudden reaction to it than the actual noise. Her stare gazed passed him for a moment to see what had caused the commotion. She caught sight of the merchant and that was enough for Arrow to want to calmly get the fuck out of there. Before she could even compose her thoughts to retreat, there was a sudden chill in her shirt. She glanced downward just in time to see Kaleb withdraw his hand. The chain of gold rested between her breasts. Pulling out the locket, she then turned around to find that Kaleb had already made a break for it.
Oh, Arrow wasn't just angry. She was fuming, seething with rage. Her blood surged to every part of her body that wasn't her mind. Adrenaline began to course through her veins. She was going to catch him, and she was going to make him pay for giving her up like that.
With all of her effort, she broke the chain, causing the clasp to clatter to the ground and a few of the ringlets, as well. Then she whipped the locket off of the necklace and threw broken remainder back toward the merchant. Finally, Arrow took off after Kaleb, paving a path of destruction in her wake.
Not only did he betray a thief's honor, he also placed the necklace in one of the most inappropriate places he could reach! Arrow managed to get within decent range of him, and, with the locket still in hand, held it up by the ridges. She aimed carefully for the back of his head and hurled the locket with all of her might, hoping to score a nick or so on the base of his cranium. Just enough to let him know that Arrow didn't fuck around. If that didn't stop him, then Arrow had other ways of getting back at him. |

It wasn’t like he was afraid of germs or cooties but he sure as hell did not ever have any intentions of getting any kind of intimate touching between Arrow and himself. No, maybe what had just transpired between them had not been intimacy but he had still done something that may not have been considered appropriate once upon a time. He also had the craziest feeling that Arrow would not be so pleased with him shoving jewelry down the front of her shirt and into places that were more for looking than for touching (unless she asked).
He didn’t dare run. He walked quickly but he did not run. Running would have been very suspicious. It would have caught the eyes of the upset merchant in an instant and he was more than certain that she was already looking for him in particular. If anyone else saw him running then they would assume that he had something to do with it. So he walked quickly and did his best to look unconcerned with anything around him. Too bad his face was clearly distressed. Kaleb was not the best at hiding his emotions and had been told more than once he was about as secretive as an opened book. It was probably a good thing that nobody was interested in him. It was probably a good thing that practically everyone here was a bunch of thieves and vagabonds. It probably was not a good thing that he had managed to piss more than one off in less than fifteen minutes. God, he had a talent for rubbing the wrong people the wrong way!
When he felt the sharp sting near the top of his neck the first thing that went through his mind was that someone had just killed him. Someone had decided he was a thief and shot him in the back of the head. All that his brain could process since it was getting blown into bits was the sharp sting and that was it. In a minute everything would go dark or he’d see a splatter of red right before his eyes (unless those popped out). And this was why getting into things with thieves was a bad idea! He paused on the street and waited for the explosion to hit him.
There never was any explosion. His brain stayed in his skull and his skull did not burst. He was just standing there rubbing his neck and now feeling like a moron. What seemed like ages in his head had just been seconds. Did he dare turn around?
He could not decide if it was a good or bad thing that he had looked back. Kaleb peered over his shoulder and decided that he had an even worse problem than the woman at the tables. That god damn Arrow was after him and he was guessing that whatever had hit him in the back of the head had been thanks to her. He glanced toward the ground but did not see any trace of whatever she had thrown. He also was not feinting or dead so he decided that whatever she had launched at his cranium had not been deadly. Instead of thinking it through any further Kaleb whirled back around and started rushing through the streets again. Let her deal with him latter when she wasn’t fuming. He was far too interested in not being dead to stand back and wait for her to throw anything bigger at him. Had he not been in her debt… no, as much as he loathed her Kaleb would not kill her. He didn’t loath her enough actually.
Kaleb was about to shout at her to quit but decided against it. There was absolutely no reason that he needed to make himself even more awkward in this kind of situation. So he just wrinkled his nose and turned away from her and continued to try and lose her in the twists and turns of the crowds and crowded piles of merchandise.[/style][STYLE=background-color: f8f8f8; width: 230px; padding: 10px; height: 30px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; font-family: tahoma; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px;][STYLE=background-color: 2c2927; color: f1f1f1; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: -1px; overflow: auto; height: 20px; padding: 5px; text-align: center;]tagged for arrow[/style][/style] |

i'll just sing with the birds ,
Of all the people...! Arrow knew better than to think any one of these low-life Outlanders had any decency. She had been on the streets practically all of her life. There was no one she could trust. Not her guild. Not Kaleb. Not anyone. Just when she thought she could, there goes the one shred of trustworthiness, right out of her hands! Just like the locket!
What happened to honor? To dignity? Arrow wouldn't leave one of her guild mates to fend for themselves. She may have been more of a lone wolf, but anyone able to get close to her was considered a comrade of sorts. Not exactly a friend, but not exactly a stranger either. She just didn't want to lose people she knew, be that guild mates or random people like Kaleb. However, Arrow did not take kindly to trespassing all over her morals. If she was going to get caught, so was he! After all, he was an accomplice (because she had made him so, but he went along with it).
Arrow had caught a glimpse of Kaleb's face, enough to know that he had turned around, probably to see what had stricken his nape. She stopped as soon as he stopped to look at her. Her eyes were wide with a bestial sort of rage. They pierced his very skull until he turned away from her again. As soon as he did so, Arrow started again, taking no time to be hot on his trail.
Anyone standing in her path was bowled over or shoved aside. She didn't care what kind of scene she caused. All she saw was Kaleb. Being stealthy no longer mattered when there was a transgressor on the loose.
She could see he was attempting to lose her in the knots of the crowded streets, but, frankly, that was foolish of him. Or had he forgotten that she was a thief? What decent thief didn't know the inside-out of the city they were inhabiting?
Arrow saw her chance as soon as he missed a large alley up ahead. She diverged into the lane, which would ultimately lead her to the road he was on, though - hopefully- slightly ahead. Then she could block him off. Then the real hurt would begin. Okay, not really. As much as she would have loved to give him a serious injury, a tongue lashing was probably all he would receive. Arrow was, quite honestly, terrified of violence and blood and whatnot.
She increased her gait just slightly, so as to catch up with him. She had no idea if she'd come out ahead, but it was worth a try. So she bolted out of the alleyway, and, with the same wild-eyed look that she had before, looked atop the heads of the passers-by for Kaleb. Unfortunately, Arrow had no such luck in finding him. Perhaps he was hiding. However, she had no zeal left to search for him. Any respect she had earned for the man had instantly fled. Arrow would make sure that, when she went to collect his debt again, to express her blatant disregard for him. Or maybe it was disappointment she was feeling. How could he look her straight in the eyes and still have the gall to run away from her? It was definitely disappointment.
Arrow skulked over toward the alley again, mostly to cloak her disdain. She leaned against the wall of a building and simply stared down at the road for a moment to compose herself. That wasn't enough. Not for Arrow. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a silver lighter, and, from her back pocket, pulled out a carton of cigarettes. She plucked one from the carton and shoved the rest back into her pocket once again. As she placed the cigarette on her lips, they pursed, and she brought her hands up, one to shelter the lighter and one to start the flame. Once the cigarette was lighted, she inhaled deeply and let her eyes roll back and then close. This was just what she needed to let go. Arrow opened her eyes then. A devious smirk appeared on her face as she drew the cigarette from her lips and exhaled a pale breath of smoke. Who needed boys when she had cigarettes? |

That was it? That was all that he had to do and he would be in the safe? He just had to keep moving and she would give up? Who was he kidding, she was a thief not a bounty hunter or a killer. Just because she could use those slender fingers to get practically whatever she wanted did not mean that she could track someone! Hah – he was the king of getting lost! And he meant that in the best possible way since getting lost meant disappearing when he needed to disappear. It was mostly thanks to his dad that he’d learned to be as uninteresting as possible when he needed to be and quite resourceful. He didn’t live off of scum to learn nothing about living without the help from the rest of society! Oh, hell, maybe his head was just sort of in a happy high what with getting out of the clutches of a renowned thief with such ease! It made him feel stupidly brilliant. It hadn’t even taken any brains to get away but he could think what he wanted in his own head, damn it. He was off free just how it should have been. He had done nothing wrong.
His desire to look around this place had fled completely. His nerves still felt like electricity was sparking at their ends because of his brush with trouble. Computer parts had become a secondary interest for the time being. Kaleb would rather not be hunkered over a piece of shit machine for the rest of the day anyways. Katarina was always so wound up with this resistance shit… Kaleb didn’t always want to be resisting. Yeah, he’d just get out of here and do what he wanted today. Screw getting his mind all tired because of boredom. Sitting around made his muscles ache.
Kaleb paused suddenly. He glanced over his shoulder. He had already walked quite a distance away from where he had first met with Arrow. He pressed his lips tightly together and started back in that direction.
It was not long before he finally came to the spot he was looking for. It was where she had launched that damned piece of whatever it was against his skull. His eyes searched the ground but it was hard to look at anything clearly when there was a constant shuffling of feet hurrying by him. And then he had found it! The rusted metal of the locket! Kaleb hurried toward it to make sure that it didn’t get kicked away and lost for good. A few people stared at him and muttered with disapproval but he hardly heard them. He bent forward and plucked the dirty thing from the ground and smiled like a kid who’d just found a treat. He rolled it between his fingers and then let it fall into his palm. He grasped it tightly and then looked back up. Now where had that devious thief gone off to? He was sure he was completely fucking mental for even thinking this.
He peeked around the corners until he came to one with a trail of smoke. He followed it since at the other end there was a pouty blonde. While she smoked he held his palm out in front of her to share his piece of pathetic metal.
“What? It’s not good enough for you?” he teased, waving his hand around slightly. “How about you keep it? To remember my handsome face. Look,” he opened up the locket to show her the empty side, “see one side is still empty. You could put your face in there and pretend your kissin me when you close it.”[/style][STYLE=background-color: f8f8f8; width: 230px; padding: 10px; height: 30px; text-align: justify; overflow: auto; font-family: tahoma; font-size: 9px; line-height: 10px;][STYLE=background-color: 2c2927; color: f1f1f1; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: -1px; overflow: auto; height: 20px; padding: 5px; text-align: center;]tagged for arrow[/style][/style] |

i'll just sing with the birds ,
The sensation of the nicotine was enough to settle Arrow's nerves, but not enough to take her mind off of Kaleb. It was true that she viewed him as something a little more than acquaintance, and it was also true that she had a fancy for him. However, Arrow was not blind and not foolish. She could make out a snake when she saw one. Fortunately for Kaleb, she did believe in second chances. Many times in her life, she had been handed do-overs, so she could do the same. Perhaps his reputation would not yet be tarnished.
Arrow's muscles and mind eventually began to relax and tarry. Thoughts did not so rapidly move, and she wasn't ready to bolt at the first glimpse of a dirty blond male. It seemed that her target would come to her, anyways. Through the ashy smoke, she could identify the culprit, returning to the scene of the crime, it seemed. She continued to inhale the nicotine, though, hardly acknowledging his presence. As much as she wanted to ignore him, his words caused her to crack a grin. She tried to play it off by again drawing on the cigarette, but the smirk remained on her lips. It was a sad smile, though. A bittersweet sort of thing.
Arrow shook her head at Kaleb. Taking one last drag off of the cigarette, she tossed it on the ground and stamped it out with the toe of her shoe. Her eyes flitted from the mashed cigarette to Kaleb, some hurt quite apparent in her blue orbs. "Don't try to cheer me up, Kaleb," she warned him, shaking her head. Strangely enough, the bittersweet smirk was still on her features. "I thought it meant something to you. That's why I tried to give it to you." Arrow gave him a cold, hard stare then. For a few moments, she seemed genuinely hurt, but she swiftly cloaked her pain with a disarming smirk. "But you know I'd much rather kiss you in person. Pictures just won't do it for me," she added playfully. "What a scene that would make! Me kissing a Resistance member... We could be the new Romeo and Juliet, except I won't be dying for you." Arrow laughed, amused by her metaphor. She was fairly sure Kaleb had no intentions of dying for her either, or even thinking about being her Romeo. She wasn't exactly a fan of romance, so it didn't bother her much. She preferred the occasional flings and friends with benefits. It just fit her lifestyle so much better. However, if she was going to have eyes for anyone, it would be Kaleb. He liked playing hard to get and it intrigued her. |
